The 12 color seasons and their palettes

Each season has its own palette. Open one to see all its colors.

How it works

Color analysis looks at three things: your undertone (cool or warm), your depth (light or deep) and your chroma (soft or bright). Each answer moves you along those three axes.

Each of the twelve seasons sits at its own point on them, and the closest one is yours; the next two are your neighboring seasons. Your answers stay in your browser: they only travel in the links you choose to share.

A test can’t see you, so take it as a starting point: try your colors next to your face, in daylight.

Color analysis: common questions

What is seasonal color analysis?

Seasonal color analysis is a style tradition that sorts people’s coloring into seasons, to suggest which shades tend to flatter them. It looks at skin undertone, hair and eyes, then points to a palette of colors, neutrals and metals. It grew out of 20th-century art teaching and fashion advice, so treat it as useful guidance, not science.

What are the 12 color seasons?

The 12 color seasons come from four families: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spring and Autumn are warm, Summer and Winter are cool. Each family splits into three by the quality that stands out most: undertone (warm or cool), depth (light or deep) or chroma (soft or bright). That gives seasons such as Soft Summer or Deep Autumn, each with its own palette.

What is my undertone, and how do I find it?

To find your skin’s undertone, look at your bare face in daylight. Golden, peach or olive hints suggest warm; pink or rosy ones suggest cool. Skin that tans golden also tends to be warm, and a photo with no filter, beside white paper, helps you compare. Greenish veins suggest warm and bluish ones cool, but the vein test alone isn’t reliable.

What colors look good on me, and how do I find out?

To see what colors look good on you, work out three things: whether warm or cool shades suit you better, light or deep ones, soft or bright ones. Hold different colors near your face in daylight: the right ones tend to even out your skin, while the wrong ones cast shadows or draw the eye away. A color analysis quiz can point you to a palette to try.

How accurate is an online color analysis test?

An online color analysis quiz can’t see you, so it depends on your answers. It’s a good starting point, and a trained analyst using fabric drapes in daylight is usually more precise. To check your result at home, hold your palette’s colors near your face in daylight, compare them with a neighboring season’s, and trust what you see in the mirror.

Does color analysis work for every skin tone?

Yes, color analysis can work for every skin tone, because seasons depend on undertone, depth and chroma together, not just on how light the skin is. Deep skin isn’t automatically Autumn or Winter, and pale skin isn’t automatically Summer. Much older advice was written with lighter skin in mind, though, so test the palette on yourself and trust what you see.
